Berlin suburban rail network

FAG transmission bearings in the Berlin suburban rail network

In August 2004, Berlin S-Bahn Berlin GmbH (suburban rail network) received the last of a total of 1000 481 series coaches from Bombardier Transportation in time for the 80th anniversary of the Berlin suburban rail network. Since 1996, 120 coaches of these two-part multiple units, so-called quarter trains, have been delivered that have covered a distance of around 250 million kilometers.

The order size of over one billion euros means that this is one of the most substantial vehicle procurement plans in Germany during the last few decades.

The suburban rail network is the number one mode of transport in the capital thanks to the extraordinary character of the network and the high reliability and speed of the transport itself. 1.2 million passengers are transported every day in Berlin and Brandenburg on a network that is 328 kilometers long and has 164 stations. The trains are operated as quarter (two-coach trains), half (four-coach trains) or as full trains (eight-coach trains). Every quarter train can hold up to 393 passengers.

FAG has supplied all axlebox bearings and transmission bearings for the 481 series since 1999.
